PR - May 30, 2016 - Intralinks Announces Content Collaboration Network

With businesses becoming increasingly global and cross-functional, flow of content and collaboration within internal and external teams across multiple locations is inevitable. The Dimension Data survey, ‘2016 Connected Enterprise Report’ shows that 70% of organizations in Singapore (as compared to 63% recorded globally) use consumer grade collaboration tools to meet their enterprise content collaboration needs. This is despite the fact that 53% Singapore organizations surveyed said they use consumer grade tools even though IT has turned those tools down. This phenomenon points to a serious risk for companies as these consumer-grade collaboration tools lack security features and customization possibilities. It puts the organizations at extreme risk when employees are transferring high-risk, high-value data in an unprotected manner.

Addressing this issue, Intralinks Holdings, Inc., a leading, global SaaS provider of secure content collaboration solutions has announced significant new integration and security capabilities that power its new Content Collaboration NetworkTM platform. These enhancements demonstrate Intralinks’ continued commitment to solving three key collaboration challenges for its customers -- data privacy, global regulatory compliance and the ability to accelerate business beyond geographical and departmental boundaries.

With a clear understanding that for users to adopt enterprise-grade collaboration platforms, a frictionless user experience is crucial. At the same time, the platform should not sacrifice the enterprise-grade security. As such, Intralinks has included the following capabilities on their platform:
  • Third party enterprise content management (ECM) and storage integration to integrate with cloud storage tools and consumer-grade collaboration tools.
  • Information rights management (IRM) to protect content at rest and in motion, and even after the content has been downloaded.
  • Data loss prevention (DLP) where users have the ability to extend DLP rules to the network to leverage existing information security investments; Intralinks is partnering with Symantec to provide this capability.

Jun 7, 2016:

Microsoft Asia today announced the launch of its Malware Infection Index 2016 (MII2016), which identifies the key malware threats in the region and ranks markets in Asia Pacific according to how much they are affected.

The top three most encountered malware include Gamarue, a malicious computer worm that is commonly distributed via exploit kits and social engineering; and Skeeyah and Peals which are trojans that try to look innocent to convince you to install them. These malware can steal your personal information, download more malware, or give a malicious hacker access to your PC. The findings are based on data from the Microsoft Malware Protection Center (MMPC) and the Microsoft Security Intelligence Report (SIRv20).

The Asia Pacific region is especially vulnerable with emerging markets most at risk of malware threats. Out of the top five locations across the globe most at risk of infection, a total of four are from the Asia Pacific — Pakistan, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Nepal, topping the rankings at first, second, fourth and fifth places respectively in terms of computers encountering malware.

In fact, the Windows Defender Advanced Threat Hunting team in April reported the discovery of a group of cybercriminals, dubbed PLATINUM, who have actively since 2009 been targeting governmental organizations, defense institutes, intelligence agencies, and telecommunication providers in South and Southeast Asia.

The top three most-encountered malware families in the Asia Pacific region were Gamarue, a worm which can give a malicious hacker control of your PC; and Trojans Skeeyah and Peals, which can steal personal information, download more malware or give hackers access to your PC.

Schroders - Jun 9, 2016 - Euro 2016: Where are the best equity opportunities among the tournament favourites?

by Martin Skanberg, Fund Manager, European Equities; Nicholette MacDonald-Brown, Fund Manager, European Equities

With the Euro 2016 football tournament about to get under way, we assess the investment opportunities offered by some of the main contenders.

As investors in European equities, our focus is on stock-specific opportunities. We are agnostic as to where a company is based; what is important for us is finding individual stocks that have been mispriced by the market. The macroeconomic environment is something we take into account, but it is possible to find interesting stock-level opportunities almost anywhere. Europe is an open economy and the kinds of companies we invest in often have operations not just in their home market but across the continent and the rest of the world too.

PR - Jun 7, 2016 - Cloud is critical to digital transformation in the APAC financial sector but lack of regulatory understanding a key hurdle

Financial services institutions (FSI) across the Asia Pacific region are under immense pressure to increase agility, improve efficiency, and embrace digital transformation, according to a study by Forrester Consulting. However too many organizations in the sector still lack thorough understanding of cloud-related banking regulations in order to completely embrace and take advantage of cloud computing.

The study commissioned by Microsoft, ‘Cloud is Critical to Digital Transformation in the Asia Pacific Financial Sector’, evaluated cloud adoption trends among FSI in Asia Pacific and gauged their knowledge and perceptions of cloud-related financial regulations. It analyzed the impact of regulatory compliance, security and privacy, and reliability concerns on current and future cloud initiatives.

According to the study, in order to thrive, FSI in Asia Pacific will (and must) increasingly embrace cloud computing — both public and hybrid -- and must therefore understand cloud-related banking regulations, formalize internal cloud policies, and implement best practices for engaging with cloud providers and banking regulators.”

One key finding from the study was that leading FSI in the region are actually using regulations to help steer public cloud initiatives, and not as an excuse to stop them. The better the firms’ understanding of regulations, the more likely they are to embrace public cloud services. In most instances, these initiatives are directly tied to customer-facing, digital banking capabilities like new customer acquisition and on-boarding.

PR - Jun 7, 2016 - Shape Your Laser Beam into a Ring Profile

Laser beams with a ring-shaped profile are required in ophthalmology, laser welding, and the material ablation of thin films.

The ring profile must be produced. Often, classic axicons are used for this purpose: conical lenses and rotation-symmetrical prisms. These elements convert a laser beam with a Gaussian profile into a Bessel beam. Axicons are very difficult to produce for very large or very small fan angles, an optimal ring profile generally cannot be achieved.

LASER COMPONENTS now introduces Holo/OR diffractive optics with an axicon structure. The advantages are immense: Irrespective of the fan angle, the ring profile is always perfect because the beam profile is produced using a grating.

Peer pressure is having a big impact on how children communicate with each other, making them more dependent on staying connected to the Internet, according to new research carried out by Kaspersky Lab and iconKids & Youth. Parents provide their kids with connected devices to help them maintain contacts with their friends, and children themselves claim that they use these devices because their friends do so.

The Connected Kids survey found that over half of parents (52%) provide their children with mobile devices so that they can communicate with their peers. The research also revealed that one in four (27%) parents provide their children with connected devices because of concerns that their child would be treated as an outsider without them.

Kids are increasingly using connected devices as an essential means of communicating with their friends and peer pressure is playing a role in pushing modern friendships online. 44% of young people say they use a connected device because their friends do and one third of kids (32%) keep in touch with their friends more often online than offline.

Q 1.) The government introduced a number of projects to jumpstart Malaysia’s potential growth, improve public service delivery and help the country achieve high-income economy status by 2020. Based on the country’s achievements so far, is Malaysia on track to become a high-income economy within the next five years?

Ms Goh: Malaysia’s achievements to date are commendable, especially when we evaluate its success against persistently slower global growth, volatile financial markets and a weaker Ringgit.

To track Malaysia’s progress so far, we look at the initiatives under the National Transformation Programme (NTP), a public sector reform programme launched in 2010 to propel Malaysia’s journey towards achieving developed nation status by 2020. Now at a significant mid-way point, the NTP has an overall achievement rate of over 100 per cent, suggesting Malaysia stands in good stead to achieve its objective by 2020.

Ms. Goh

According to the NTP 2015 annual report, key milestones have been achieved and proven by way of macroeconomic stability and a firmer Ringgit. Efforts to improve Malaysia’s resilience have also been acknowledged by international rating agencies, Standard & Poor’s and Moody’s, who reaffirmed the country’s A- and A3 ratings with a stable outlook, respectively.

Moving forward, however, maintaining such momentum will be challenging given the tougher operating environment both globally and within Malaysia. We believe further investments from the private sector will help boost the country’s economic growth. However, there is a need for the government to continue creating a conducive and competitive landscape where multinational corporations, government-linked companies, private enterprises, and new innovative startups can thrive together in building Malaysia’s future economy.

Q 2.) What are some of the key projects that will contribute to Malaysia’s growth and resilience?

Ms Goh: Some key infrastructure projects that will contribute to growth include the MRT Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya Line (MRT2), the Light Rail Transit 3, the Pan Borneo Highway, the KL-Singapore High Speed Rail (HSR) project, and the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex in Johor. A recent uptick in infrastructure projects and follow-through of capital spending should yield higher investment growth in the next few quarters.

Other notable achievements driving growth and resilience include the 30 per cent reported rise in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from RM797.3 billion to RM1.13 trillion fuelled by higher private sector consumption and public investments, 37 per cent increase in Gross National Income (GNI) per capita to US$10,440 and the creation of more than 1.8 million jobs between 2010 and 2015.

Q 3.) Does Malaysia remain an attractive investment opportunity for foreign investors and which areas of the economy are attracting the most interest?

Ms Goh: Foreign investors will look at a country’s historical growth and plans to catalyse future growth when considering it as an investment opportunity. According to the International Monetary Fund, the growth differential is the single most important driver of foreign capital inflows and investments. Much of the decline in emerging market investment inflows can be explained by the narrowing differential in growth prospects between emerging market and advanced economies. However, since 2011, Malaysia has experienced a positive growth differential, recording average growth of four per cent over and above G7 advanced nations.

Despite sustaining four quarters of slowing growth, the Malaysian economy continues to display an underlying resilience supported by its high labour force participation rate and positive employment growth. In addition, Malaysia’s favourable demographics, growing working age population, positive nominal wage growth, accommodative monetary policies, and government support measures are contributing to its appeal. Fiscal reform measures such as the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and subsidy rationalisation have also helped to cap the fiscal deficit. The public debt has been stable at 54.5 per cent of GDP and government guaranteed debt at 15.4 per cent of GDP which puts consolidated government debt below 70 per cent. Emerging markets with lower public debt, tighter capital controls, and higher foreign exchange reserves tend to experience smaller swings in capital flows.

Q 4.) In your opinion, has Malaysia been successful at diversifying its economy and how will this impact the economy?

Ms Goh: Malaysia’s economy is well diversified with the services sector contributing 54 per cent, manufacturing 23 per cent, construction 4.4 per cent, mining and quarrying 8.9 per cent and agriculture 8.8 per cent of total GDP. Over 16 per cent of Malaysia’s exports are in commodity sectors while 80 per cent are in manufactured products. While manufacturing exports are largely concentrated in the electrical and electronics (E&E) segment, many E&E firms both multinational corporations (MNCs) and domestic enterprises have diversified from manufacturing traditional personal computers and parts into higher value-added segments.

One example is moving into cloud computing and increased involvement in the enterprise servers segments. Another significant development is Malaysia’s increasing involvement in the automotive and semiconductors industries. The ongoing E&E diversification puts Malaysia in a good position to capitalise on demand from advanced economies.

Greater economic diversification has also reduced Malaysia’s dependence on oil revenue with share of oil revenue projected to fall to 14.1 per cent in 2016 compared to 35.8 and 41.3 per cent in 2011 and 2009, respectively.

Q 5.) What is your economic outlook for the second half of 2016?

Ms Goh: We think the economy will recover gradually in the second half of 2016 as we begin to see the effects of mega infrastructure capital spending and the government’s growth stabilisation measures.

Key stabilisation measures include a three per cent cut in the Employee Provident Fund (EPF) contribution rate, a special RM2,000 tax relief for middle-income tax payers, an increase in minimum wages and civil servant wages, visa waiver for China tourists, as well as a one per cent corporate tax cut.

These measures could effectively boost nominal GDP by at least one per cent. As such, we continue to project GDP growth of 4.2 per cent this year, with an average of four per cent growth in the first half of 2016 and 4.4 per cent in the second half 2016. The Ringgit continues to show some volatility amid expectations for a US Federal Reserve rate hike in the coming months.

Nonetheless, the Ringgit is still the second best performing currency in the Asian region after the Japanese Yen. Our outlook for the Ringgit remains positive driven by recovering oil prices, the country’s sustained current account surplus and intact fiscal deficit targets.

Muslims Turn to Online Retail to Purchase Festive Items for Ramadan and Hari Raya

May 26, 2016:

Criteo, the performance marketing technology company, today released seasonal data in anticipation of Ramadan to help eCommerce businesses better engage consumers during the festive season. Based on consumers’ online browsing and buying activity, the second and third weeks of Ramadan represent an opportunity for retailers to engage consumers when they are actively purchasing items for upcoming celebrations. During this period in 2015, there was a 128 percent uplift in eCommerce transactions.

Criteo data also revealed a 75 percent increase in traffic to eCommerce platforms during the same period, of which six in 10 consumers were found to be viewing products across multiple devices. To attract and retain customers during Ramadan, retailers must ensure that their online advertising campaigns are optimised across desktops, laptops and mobile devices.

The findings are based on an analysis of 1.5 million online transactions in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore before, during and after Ramadan in 2015.

“The Islamic holy month is marked by festivities that involve redecorating homes, gift giving or wearing new clothes to welcome visiting friends and relatives. Rising smartphone adoption and more time spent at home as Muslims break their fast together, means it becomes more convenient if essential items are purchased online. During this period, retailers must ensure that they are helping consumers sift through online product inventories to discover what they want and need, by delivering personalised and relevant content,” said Yuko Saito, Managing Director, Criteo Southeast Asia.

Criteo’s eCommerce Industry Outlook 2016 and analysis of shopping data from 2015 highlights two additional trends that will impact Southeast Asian retailers during Ramadan.

Mobile apps to overtake mobile browsers in driving eCommerce sales

Smartphones have become the first point of brand interaction or product discovery for many consumers. In the past, smartphones were largely used to browse and research products, with transactions completed on desktops and laptops. With more than half of online sales in Southeast Asia currently taking place on mobile, it is clear that consumers are now more comfortable performing transactions on mobile devices.

In addition, almost half of the region’s mobile transactions are now completed on mobile apps, rather than mobile browsers. With sales on apps expected to surpass sales on browsers in the months ahead, eCommerce businesses must seriously consider apps as a part of their customer acquisition and sales strategy. This will include improving user interface, monetisation tactics and app setup (through deep linking, feed optimisation, SDK analytics tools etc.), and adopting in-app retargeting.

“As Islamic traditions impact consumption decisions, we are seeing fashion-conscious Muslim consumers significantly influence retail trends in Southeast Asia. ZALORA has consistently provided our customers in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia with a selection of elegant Muslim fashion wear, especially during Hari Raya. We prepare for the Hari Raya season months ahead, lining up activities to build awareness and engage our target audience, especially on our mobile web and mobile app platforms. Criteo is one of our partners in driving this and their advanced retargeting platform delivered a 100 percent sales uplift during last year’s campaign,” said Tito Costa, Chief Marketing Officer, ZALORA Group.

“Ramadan is often a busy time for companies offering consumer goods. Increasingly, online stores and mobile apps are joining in the swirl of seasonal promotions, in part to create brand awareness and boost web traffic post-Ramadan. We would advise online retailers to invest in both search engine marketing and retargeting, and draw on data they have collected from users to better understand how and when they shop before, during and after the holiday season. Besides, based on our data in 2015, the purchase power during Ramadhan increased two to three times,” said Sheji Ho, Chief Marketing Officer, aCommerce.

Online and offline integration will be the new norm, with online platforms influencing in-store sales

Some traditional retailers are already integrating offline and online channels to better serve customers and increase sales. One example is MatahariMall in Indonesia. Apart from launching its eCommerce platforms for web, mobile web and app, the company added 200 online-to-offline points at its existing departmental stores and hypermarts, allowing customers to pick up their online orders and continue shopping in-store.

“During Ramadan, eCommerce sites typically experience a significant increase in online traffic. However, 98 to 99 percent of these online visitors do not make purchases on their first visit. It is therefore important that we combine retargeting with an online-to-offline approach. Retargeting encourages consumers to return to our site and complete a purchase. Our customers also shop on the go on their smartphones and our online-to-offline points allow for quick pick-ups and increased foot traffic to our brick-and-mortar stores. This strategy has increased our month-on-month remarketing sales by 160 percent and we expect a further spike during Ramadan,” said Timothius Martin, Head of Performance Marketing, MatahariMall.com.

With the majority of consumers now researching online before or while visiting a store, understanding a shopper’s online activity is essential. According to Google, eight out of 10 shoppers with a smartphone are using it inside the store to help them with product research and price comparisons, with most of them eventually completing a transaction at Point of Sale (POS). Retailers can acquire a better view of the customer’s shopping journey by connecting with them via mobile apps or beacon technology, before matching each customer’s email ID with loyalty programmes at in-store POS terminals.

“Ramadan is a major shopping occasion, similar to Christmas. During this period, consumers tend to spend more time online, take less time to consider a purchase and request for pick-ups at offline locations or home delivery on short notice. Retailers must recognise the value that mobile technology can bring and use it as a foundational building block to deliver integrated and seamless online and offline retail experiences. This will be crucial to engaging consumers across all channels and increasing sales conversions,” said Saito.

Kaspersky Lab Exposes Massive Underground Market Selling Over 70,000 Hacked Servers

Jun 15, 2016:

Kaspersky Lab researchers have investigated a global forum where cybercriminals can buy and sell access to compromised servers for as little as $6 each. The xDedic marketplace, which appears to be run by a Russian-speaking group, currently lists 70,624 hacked Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) servers for sale. Many of the servers host or provide access to popular consumer websites and services and some have software installed for direct mail, financial accounting and Point-of-Sale (PoS) processing. They can be used to target the owners’ infrastructures or as a launch-pad for wider attacks, while the owners, including government entities, corporations and universities, have little or no idea of what’s happening.

xDedic is a powerful example of a new kind of cybercriminal marketplace: well-organized and supported and offering everyone from entry-level cybercriminals to APT groups fast, cheap and easy access to legitimate organizational infrastructure that keeps their crimes below the radar for as long as possible.

A European internet service provider (ISP) alerted Kaspersky Lab to the existence of xDedic and the companies worked together to investigate how the forum operates. The process is simple and thorough: hackers break into servers, often through brute-force attacks, and bring the credentials to xDedic. The hacked servers are then checked for their RDP configuration, memory, software, browsing history and more – all features that customers can search through before buying. After that, they are added to a growing online inventory that includes access to:
  • Servers belonging to government networks, corporations and universities
  • Servers tagged for having access to or hosting certain websites and services, including gaming, betting, dating, online shopping, online banking and payment, cell phone networks, ISPs and browsers
  • Servers with pre-installed software that could facilitate an attack, including direct mail, financial and PoS software
  • All supported by a range of hacking and system information tools. From as little as $6 per server, members of the xDedic forum can access all of a server’s data and also use it as a platform for further malicious attacks. This could potentially include targeted attacks, malware, DDoS, phishing, social-engineering and adware attacks, among others.

The servers’ legitimate owners, reputable organizations including government networks, corporations and universities are often unaware that their IT infrastructure has been compromised. Further, once a campaign has been completed, the attackers can put access to the server back up for sale and the whole process can begin again.

The xDedic marketplace seems to have opened for business some time in 2014, and has grown significantly in popularity since the middle of 2015. In May 2016, it listed 70,624 servers from 173 countries for sale, posted in the names of 416 different sellers. The top 10 countries affected are: Brazil, China, Russia, India, Spain, Italy, France, Australia, South Africa and Malaysia.

The group behind xDedic appears to be Russian-speaking, and claims that it merely provides a trading platform and has no links or affiliations to the sellers.

“xDedic is further confirmation that cybercrime-as-a-service is expanding through the addition of commercial ecosystems and trading platforms. Its existence makes it easier than ever for everyone, from low-skilled malicious attackers to nation-state backed APTs to engage in potentially devastating attacks in a way that is cheap, fast and effective. The ultimate victims are not just the consumers or organizations targeted in an attack, but also the unsuspecting owners of the servers: they are likely to be completely unaware that their servers are being hijacked again and again for different attacks, all conducted right under their nose,” said Costin Raiu, Director, Global Research and Analysis Team, Kaspersky Lab.

Kaspersky Lab advises organizations to:
  • Install a robust security solution as part of a comprehensive, multi-layered approach to IT infrastructure security
  • Enforce the use of strong passwords as part of the server authentication process
  • Implement a continuous process of patch management
  • Undertake a regular security audit of the IT infrastructure
  • Consider investing in threat intelligence services which will keep the organization informed of emerging threats and offer an insight into the criminal perspective to help them assess their level of risk.

A Quick Guide to Delivering Positive Customer Experiences

According to Gartner, 90 percent of businesses will be competing mostly on customer experience rather than on product quality this year. This is a substantial jump from previous years – 36 percent in 2014 and 58 percent in 2015. With customer experience now the key differentiator, businesses are under pressure to ensure that every customer contact is positive.

In fact, a recent survey conducted by management consulting firm, Fifth Quadrant, on behalf of LogMeIn, has revealed that customer experience may have a direct impact on the business’ bottom line. It was found that 72 percent of customers across South East Asia will stop patronizing a brand following a bad experience, and 69 percent will advise their family and friends to avoid that brand. The stakes are high for businesses – fail to please, and businesses can fail on sustaining customer loyalty and advocacy. The power is now in the hands of consumers. Especially online, where consumers are spoilt for choice with products and services, and they can easily browse and compare among various brands. So, what can businesses do to ensure they navigate this customer experience journey successfully?

Below are three ways businesses can avoid the pitfalls of customer service to deliver a customer experience that builds confidence, trust and share of wallet.

1.) Create personalized and relevant engagement

Pitfall to avoid: Having your customer interact with machines.

One top driver of customer satisfaction is the ability to connect consumers to representatives who can resolve their queries or problems. Rather than connect customers to an automated phone service, businesses need to deliver a personalized and relevant engagement at every touchpoint – where, when and how consumers may engage. This can dramatically increase customer satisfaction as it demonstrates to customers that they are valued.

Moreover, customers expect to connect with businesses across multiple channels these days. That is, besides the traditional telephone hotline and email address, customers want to be able to contact businesses via web-based chat, web links, SMS, and social media. Businesses need to ensure that these channels are setup with the right technology and processes, and resourced effectively to meet the prompt demands of the consumer.

2.) Think ‘low effort experience’

Pitfall to avoid: Making your customers do more than they need to.

Businesses need to win favor by making it easier and faster for customers to get their queries resolved. Consumers are frequently annoyed by customer representatives asking them to repeat account information or their issues every time they interact with a business, sometimes over different channels. This can be resolved by combining consumer data and interaction history into a single source of truth. Customer engagement points need to be integrated and accessing information from one data source to offer that seamless experience to consumers. This means consumers do not need to repeat themselves when interacting with a business across channels, resulting in a reduced level of effort and a positive customer experience.

Providing 24x7 access to online self-service options may be another option that can give consumers the convenience of performing their tasks when and where they want. Website visitors should be able to find answers to frequently asked questions quickly on their own before being directed to a customer agent for more advanced, personalized support.

3.) Improve workflow with the right tools

Pitfall to avoid: Failing to empower your agents in their interactions with customers.

The best service desks arm their customer agents with tools that allow them to improve their workflow and boost customer experience, thereby enhancing customer satisfaction.

For example, businesses can increase productivity by eliminating the need for agents to repeatedly type answers to common questions. Once a customer agent selects a pre-prepared message on their email or web chat tool, they can edit it to add a personal touch. Having the right support solution allows the service desk to automate fixes to routine issues, eliminating the need to reinvent the wheel each time a repeat problem crops up.

Ultimately, business leaders need to understand that they must continually adapt operational processes to offer quality customer experiences because consumer expectations change over time. Also, technologies evolve, and there will be new channels of communication.

The point is to deliver customer experiences that offer accessibility, responsiveness, and consistency. To achieve this, businesses need to have an enterprise-wide customer experience strategy that delivers high levels of consumer engagement.

Customer experience can no longer be viewed as support function, but a vital element of business performance. Successful businesses see the entire customer engagement journey through, as this is the only way to ensure customer loyalty and advocacy – rewards that will serve businesses into the future.

The Adaptive Trust Defence to Network Security

By Justin Chiah, Director and General Manager, South East Asia and Taiwan at Aruba, a Hewlett-Packard Enterprise Company.

The array of connected devices and applications today has put information retrieval in the palm of our hands, blurring the lines between the workplace and social life. This desire to stay connected to everything anywhere, and at all times, is driving the demand for the all-wireless workplace. And this trend is set to continue – Gartner forecasted that 6.4 billion connected ‘things’ (or devices) will be in use worldwide in 2016 alone.

Justin Chiah, Director & GM, SEA & Taiwan, Aruba

While businesses must embrace the inherent productivity and creativity that this trend brings, they also need to ensure that company assets do not suffer as a result. Companies need to be mindful that securing this information needs to extend beyond their own equipment to consider how their use of mobile and social technology might create issues for their organization and potentially introduce new facets of digital risk.

With this tectonic shift from fixed, static wired networks to open, dynamic environments where mobility rules, IT managers are now faced with all new challenges when safeguarding the security of company data and IT systems.

#GenMobile shows indifference to data security

Today’s new and rising mobile generation, what we call #GenMobile, live in a world where they rely on their mobile devices for every aspect of their personal and work related communication. Yet, this generation of mobile users often show indifference to the importance of security procedures and measures.

In a recent study conducted by Aruba Networks, a Hewlett Packet Enterprise company, it was revealed that as many as six out of 10 respondents are happy to let others regularly use their work and personal smartphones, and nearly a third of workers admit to having lost data due to the misuse of a mobile device.

With these figures, it is not surprising that network security is getting increasingly difficult, with room for improvement in the way businesses prepare for the high-risk, security-indifferent mind-set for the #GenMobile workforce.

Can’t beat ‘em? Get one step ahead of ‘em

Organizations now require a new network security strategy. If IT is going to protect the enterprise network and its resources, it must adapt to the way #GenMobile works – starting from inside the perimeter.

To do this, IT must take advantage of known, contextual data that it can leverage and trust – a person’s role inside an organization, the devices and apps they use, and their location – to create policies that fortify network security and adapt to mobility needs.

Organizations should strive to build a secure and operational framework for all workers, rather than stifle them. By adopting the following five-step checklist, organizations can ensure their IT teams are prepared for the risks that #GenMobile workers bring.

Don’t sweat. There’s a game plan

1. A safety code
A basic security policy is an absolute prerequisite for every firm to lay down a description of its core protection controls and its employees’ usage of those technologies. Even for a small firm of just two employees, formalizing an approach to information security is crucial. Such a policy should cover roles, devices, locations and other contextual attributes.

2. Administrative guidelines
Organizations should implement enforcement rules that extend from applications to devices to the network. Such an approach should integrate services across MDM, firewalls, IPS and policy engines to deliver common policy enforcement for all sensitive information.

3. Goal-orientated objectives
IT must measure and monitor user behaviour to ensure that security policies are mapped to business objectives. This will ensure that policies achieve the result of securing corporate information and systems without impacting usability and employee productivity.

4. Adequate training
Even the most well thought through security frameworks will fail without the requisite employee training. This should not only include a needs-assessment by employee type, but should also educate employees on why such actions are important and how they can assist in improving corporate security.

5. Feedback loop
Finally, ensure that IT has a mechanism for employee feedback and a service level agreement in place for how to respond to employee input and requests. Often times IT is able to improve the effectiveness of automated workflows and security policies simply by listening to employee feedback.

#GenMobile is the future of business. In a contemporary, connected world, firms that stick to their old business models and fail to adapt to #GenMobile will struggle against their more flexible, agile competitors. At the same time, firms will have to minimize the risk of data and information corruption or loss.

Organizations need to take an adaptive trust defence to connectivity and data security. How the business world now adapts to the behaviour of the #GenMobile workforce may be the make or break for long term boom or bust. Embracing #GenMobile’s penchant for openness, innovation, collaboration and some degree of risk is good – but only when an organization can understand and plan for the security risks these behaviours bring with them.

Universal Robots Launches Developers Program

This is definitely something fun - something that I have been waiting for.

In a nutshell, the developers program is powered by eco-system called the Universal Robots+.

The UR+ is something like the AppStore or GooglePlay, it allows developers to publish application built for co-bot arms (UR3, UR5, UR 10) - in layman terms, it is called the showroom.

This is also the platform which will empower businesses to build customized application for co-bot arms targeting proprietary and legacy environments.

All these solutions are coined as URCaps.

To get started, all developers (individual and companies) are required to sign-up to +You program - it is free-of-charge.

“When developers have received our approval for designing within Universal Robots+, we will support them via our local subsidiaries by providing robots for testing and optimising URCaps. On request, robots can also be purchased at a reduced price, provided that they will be used exclusively for the development and testing of new UR-related components,” says Stefan Tøndering Stubgaard, Manager of Universal Robots’ Corporate Technical Support.

Up to date, some URCaps have been developed, these include the vision-guided Pick & Place solution of Robotiq, the Canadian manufacturer of flexible robot grippers and sensors.

Software release (Version 3.3)

Alongside the launch of Universal Robots+, a new update for the robot arms’ operating software has been published. The new release (Software Version 3.3) includes updates such as the PROFINET IO device functionality. The new compatibility with PROFINET protocols opens up numerous additional areas of deployment and activities for robots.

“A key feature of the update supporting the Universal Robots+ platform is the ability for providers to now offer solutions that interface seamlessly with the UR software,” says Østergaard.

Until now, the software enabling communication between developer applications and the UR robot arms had to be implemented using a relatively complex script code, which was time-consuming and a difficult task for the majority of end-users to handle. As the Software Version 3.3 consist in parts of open source software, developers can apply their software as an add-on, significantly reducing the time needed for implementation at the end customer’s premises, thus decreasing both price and potential risks.

Sign up now !!!

Entering the Universal Robots+ Community

Developers only need to complete a few steps to get their application solutions featured in the Universal Robots+ showroom. Registration is free in the +YOU community forum, where they can submit their application ideas.

In order to become a member of the +YOU community, the following conditions must be met:

1.) Submission of a first draft detailing the type of capabilities being developed. The following categories of URCaps can be chosen:
  • End-effectors: All types of end-of-arm-tooling (EOAT) such as grippers, force-torque-sensors, screwdrivers, and many more.
  • Accessory components: Hardware products that do not belong to the category of end-effectors. For instance, cable guidance, protective covers, communication modules, vision systems, HMI-panels, etc.
  • Software: These can be either software plug-ins which have been developed with the URCaps Software Development Kit (SDK), PC programmes for the simulation of robot systems or programming, or UR-Library Plug-ins for the software of third parties such as the PLC programming suite.

2.) Moreover, the developer needs to offer an established support service with a response time of maximum 24 hours on weekdays.

3.) The developer must present a website with valid contact data.

After verification of the URCaps by UR, developers will receive access to the +YOU online forum, where they can exchange questions and ideas. In addition, all members of the community will receive access to the company-internal developer support, which will assist (if necessary) in developing a market mature application. Additionally, the URCaps Software Development Kit can be downloaded free-of-charge.

Jun 30, 2016:

Microsoft Malaysia announced a three-year partnership with the Malaysian Prisons Department (under the purview of the Ministry of Home Affairs), to provide approximately 500 juvenile inmates, aged 16 to 21, across 13 prison schools, digital literacy and upskilling opportunities in digital inclusion, entrepreneurship and capacity building.

The main objective of this collaboration was to prepare these individuals for employability, and to pursue further educational opportunities upon their release. Microsoft also shared that the collaboration would see these inmates receiving benefits through programs with Microsoft volunteers, student partners and NGO partners such as Yayasan Generasi Gemilang. Inmates from the prison schools would be trained to use basic computer programs such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel. The company is also looking at providing training to teachers from the prison in the areas of digital literacy, which would help them to impart the necessary skills required to improve leaning outcomes.

Today’s announcement also marks the company’s second collaboration with the Prisons Department of Malaysia. Last year, Microsoft Malaysia’s Hour of Code initiative introduced over 160 Henry Gurney Prison School inmates to a specially created “Minecraft” coding tutorial, in which students and educators learnt about the basics of coding – allowing them to navigate, mine, craft and explore in a two-dimensional “Minecraft” world, plugging together blocks to complete actions and generate code.

How human-centric design thinking can power creative problem-solving and drive change

By Theo Forbath, Vice President, Digital Transformation, Cognizant Digital Works and Kipp Lynch, AVP, UX Research and Design, Cognizant Digital Works

The lone scientist working in a lab discovers a breakthrough and changes everything; a sudden inspiration comes in a dream; a brainstorming session among the company’s best and brightest leads to the next killer app―all these scenarios might make a good movie, but they seldom reflect reality.

Creativity and problem-solving are not individual endeavours, nor do they occur in isolation. Fortunately, companies are beginning to embrace new ways of fostering innovation. Instead of approaching a new product or service creation by defining a set of requirements, many companies are seeking first to understand the human needs behind the product or service, to develop an overall experience.

This approach―often called ‘design thinking’―is based on developing a thorough understanding of what the user goals are from multiple viewpoints―emotional, psychological and behavioural. Through an iterative process of observation, ideation, rapid prototyping and testing, design thinking can help to craft an experience that is meaningful to the person engaged with it, one that seamlessly meshes the physical and digital interactions of people, processes and things. Design thinking is a mindset that draws on the interaction of all these components.

Successful design thinking incorporates the following principles that work best when used iteratively and in combination with one another.
  1. Users interact with the mock-ups, simulations and sketches and provide feedback. This is an iterative and continuous process rather than a formal event that occurs when a prototype or design is complete.
  2. Rather than develop a full robust prototype, the team creates mock-ups, simulations and process sketches as a quick way to convey the overall concept to users―the look, feel and functionality of the experience.
  3. The team translates the insights gleaned through direct customer research, and uses visual ideation techniques, such as sticky notes, to promote creativity, solve problems and generate new ideas.
  4. The team interacts directly with and observes how users behave, with the goal of deeply understanding what they want or need on multiple levels, including emotionally, psychologically and functionally.

As the world gets increasingly digitised, design thinking will be critical to defining the user experience, and it is that experience―rather than slogans, logos and marketing messages―that defines the brand. Today, user experience design delves much more deeply into creating an entire experience that meets users’ unacknowledged―and often unarticulated―needs, and mirrors how we straddle both the digital and physical worlds.

Avoiding mistakes

It is far too easy to focus on one component of design thinking and downplay the rest. We often see project teams begin by sketching concepts and developing prototypes and then exclaiming that they have incorporated design thinking into their process. Recently, a company that was working to develop a new concept for its stores showed us a list of cutting-edge technologies and several interesting concepts for prototypes to take back to its senior managers. While some of the ideas were interesting, the company had skipped the customer research step and spent no time with actual users. The experiences were not built around an in-depth understanding of the needs and goals of customers, resulting in wasted time and money.

Conversely, we also encounter companies that directly listen to and observe their customers, but rather than spending time ideating and sketching, they quickly jump to a list of requirements. In this case, the project begins well, as team members jot down observations on sticky notes and group them on a wall. But instead of exploring the ideas in a visual manner, the team ends up translating the notes into a spreadsheet.

Performing any one of these activities in isolation―observation, ideation, prototyping and testing―misses the critical point of design thinking, which is both a journey and a mindset. By picking and choosing certain elements, the project team is likely to miss critical insights that could change the product or service from barely acceptable to delightful.

Design thinking = design doing

Design thinking is really a new way of acting and behaving. It becomes real when embodied in the team and is expressed as a new way of ‘doing’. Even though many people say they can’t draw and are reluctant to create a simple sketch, the very act of ‘doing’ dramatically changes not only team members’ understanding, but also individuals’ understanding. This ‘thinking aloud on paper’ can help crystallise thoughts. The act of sketching―even stick figures―alters our thinking.

Testing and validating concepts or prototypes doesn’t always have to be approached as formal usability tests. With design thinking, testing and validation are often more informal and participatory. The testing should not be held off until the prototype is complete; rather, user feedback should come at all stages of ideation―process sketches, simple mock-ups, simulations, etc. A prototype or experience simulation can be taken into the field, where potential users (customers, business partners or employees) can interact playfully with it and provide genuine feedback.

At this point, many teams focus on a minimal viable product to generate quick user feedback on product features and usefulness. Unfortunately, this shifts thinking towards “what can be obtained from customers,” rather than “what can be created to delight them”―something we call a minimal delightful product.

Extending the experience

Design thinking doesn’t end when the product or service is launched; it can and should be incorporated into the experience itself, and used continuously to refine and enhance the experience. While the human element is critical to design thinking, intelligent devices and sensors can provide additional eyes and ears to what happens when the individual engages with the product or service, in a way that would otherwise be impractical, intrusive and unwelcome. With the Internet of Things (IoT), increasingly sophisticated and real-time analytics and other emerging digital technologies, companies can virtually observe the consumer, uncover unmet needs and incorporate those insights as part of their experience, further blurring the borders between the physical and digital worlds.

The IoT will be an increasingly powerful aid to organisations looking to design a better experience. Devices and objects instrumented to collect and share intelligence on product usage and user behaviour, both online and offline, will yield a treasure trove of real-time insights that can help organisations anticipate customer needs, inform continuous product improvement and serve up contextually relevant content and experiences.

Future of experience design

While there is a long road to travel between today’s capabilities and the emerging vision of the future, businesses should get started now on the journey to embrace and integrate design thinking throughout their organisation.

Organisations must:

  • Simultaneously apply all elements of design thinking, such as observation, iterative ideation, rapid prototyping and frequent testing. Understand every aspect of the user experience (from the user’s perspective) before selecting which technologies will be used to enable the new product or service.
  • Establish interdisciplinary teams and processes that put customer needs, desires, emotions and motivations at the centre of the product and service design. Finally, never lose sight that underlying all of these activities is the unwavering focus on, and empathy for, the person for whom the experience is being created in the first place.
  • The experiences that result from a design thinking process are not superficial; they necessitate changes to be made in supporting business processes, technologies and organisational structures. The new customer experiences that arise will require an integration and re-orchestration of how the company relates to customers on all channels.

PR - Jul 12, 2016 - Travel stimulates higher-risk behavior online among consumers, says Kaspersky Lab report

The latest research from Kaspersky Lab shows that consumers are endangering themselves and their data because they are letting their guard down abroad. From using risky Wi-Fi connections to handing their smartphones over to strangers, the research highlights the perils of consumer traveling habits, with two fifths (42%) admitting they are less secure in how they connect on holiday, compared to how they connect when they travel for business.

The research shows many of us are careless with our connected devices abroad. A quarter (28%) have left them unsupervised (such as on a table or in a meeting room), and one in five (19%) have left them with hotel concierges – rising to as many as two in five Americans on both scores. Photo opportunities also drive such risky practice, with 18% of us – and one in four under-25s – more likely to hand our smartphones over to passing strangers when abroad, to take a photo.

The report findings suggest that when we are in ‘holiday mode’, our behavior is often erratic, and highly risky. Many say they are more likely to contact people they don’t know (18%), and engage in ‘sexting’ (6%) while abroad. The survey also finds 15% drink more when abroad, rising to 29% of Brits.

Schroders - Jul 7, 2016 - EM and Brexit: should we worry ?

By Keith Wade, Chief Economist and Strategist

In any discussion of the economic and market outlook, even for Emerging Markets (EM), it is difficult to escape the pervasive influence of Brexit. The market reaction to the referendum vote suggested a degree of exposure for EM, as the MSCI EM index sold off along with global equity markets, falling around 3.5% on the day after the vote (though note that this was a smaller fall than the overall developed market or European indices). Currencies also weakened slightly, though these losses have begun to retrace. While it seems unlikely that EM economies will be anywhere near as badly impacted as the UK or even Europe, it is possible to envisage a few channels through which this could affect them.

Mind the Gap: The app-data gap is stifling more than just productivity

Jul 11, 2016 - By Mark Lazarus, Director of Technology, Nimble Storage

In today’s innovation-powered economy, ideas need to travel at the speed of thought. Business users now expect immediate access to data without interruption, demanding information at their fingertips anywhere and at any time. However, when the delivery of data to applications is disrupted, a gap is created – the app-data gap. This app-data gap not only has a negative impact on user experience, but also has repercussions on the business outcome and the organizational effectiveness.

According to a global study conducted by Nimble Storage on nearly 3,000 IT professionals and business users, nearly 75 percent of Southeast Asian respondents reported that the speed of applications they use significantly impacts their ability to perform their best in the workplace, with more than half (57 percent) of them saying that they lose more than 10 percent of their workday waiting on technology to deliver the information they need.

When application performance and availability are impacted by the app-data gap, organizations are forced into a reactive mode, which is a dangerous cycle for IT leaders, as there is little opportunity to partner with the business on proactive initiatives. IT is perceived as a barrier to business productivity rather than a partner in increasing competitiveness.

While it is clear that positive cultural changes can help drive greater productivity, it is important to also look at how the IT infrastructure they are providing is impacting their workers’ performance. Most often, IT teams’ first instinct is that storage infrastructure must be the primary cause of application performance issues. This presumption leads IT professionals to implement fast flash-based storage technologies to accelerate performance but flash alone does not address the 54 percent of unrelated storage issues.

Therefore, IT organizations need to leverage predictive analytics that incorporates both data science and machine learning to optimize the performance and availability of applications.

Organizations looking to plug the gap should take a holistic approach to their IT infrastructure to address the issue and ultimately improve productivity.
