Symantec Introduces New Era of Advanced Threat Protection

Oct 29, 2015 - K.L

Symantec Corp., the global leader in cyber security, introduced Symantec Advanced Threat Protection (ATP), the first solution that can detect and remediate advanced threats across control points, from a single console with just a click, all with no new endpoint agents to deploy.

Advanced threats, such as ransomware, remote access trojans, advanced persistent threats (APTs) and zero day attacks, are on the rise and security professionals can no longer rely on using individual point products at each control point to stop them. The process of uncovering threat data across endpoint, network and email gateways is manual and time-consuming, which gives attackers an edge. Symantec ATP correlates suspicious activity across all control points and prioritizes the events that pose the most risk to an organization. Once a critical threat is identified, it can now be quickly contained and new instances can be blocked.

Symantec ATP allows customers to:
  • Uncover a full range of threats from APTs to zero day attacks across endpoint, network and email, with cross-control point detection and environmental search
  • Prioritize what matters most by correlating the threat intelligence from across local control points with all that Symantec sees globally through its massive telemetry
  • Remediate the threats fast through containment of endpoints and blocking new instances across control points, with one click, from a single console
  • Leverage existing investments in Symantec Endpoint Security and Email Security.cloud, without deploying any new endpoint agents.

DCD Focus on Thailand Drives the Move Towards the Digital Economy and New Era of Cloud

Nov 3, 2015

Recognizing the potential of Thailand as the next digital economy, global media company and conference producer, DatacenterDynamics (DCD), will be hosting its second conference in Thailand under its umbrella of DCD “Focus” events. For its second year in Thailand, DCD will focus on the theme “Moving Towards a Digital Economy and The New Era of Cloud” to drive the industry towards the best practices and innovations required for the enablement of cloud adoption and the digital economy.

With strong government support and growing inward investment, Thailand is beginning a digital infrastructure journey that will see it support a growing community of cloud users and data center operators. This is also supported by a report released earlier this year by DCD Intelligence, where the market showed much potential with a high Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) to 2020 for assets (12.32%) and investment (12.11%).

To be the next digital hub in Asia could be a little too far-fetched, with strong competitors such as Hong Kong and Singapore who already have stable infrastructure to support the digital economy of the region. Nevertheless, the vision of digital economy is realistic, with the 67 million population of Thailand, and the impressive popularity of social media there.

Thailand is putting in great efforts to support this vision. Cloud has a prominent and visible role to enhance the digital economy. Taking the lead, the e-Government Agency of Thailand has been setting standards and promoting cloud adoption through practical steps, such as the introduction of G-Cloud. Apart from the government’s effort, active support for the industry can be seen through the many strong local players, such as TCC Technology and True Internet, who provide data center and cloud services to meet the growing demand of the market. Complimented with tax incentives through the Board of Investment of Thailand (BOI), the region has also seen a rise in foreign investments from international firms such as NTT Facilities and SuperNap International.

PR - Nov 3, 2015 - Tata Comm. debuts ultra-low power connectivity solution to pave the way for the Internet of Things in India

Tata Communications today announces the successful trials of a new Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN), based on LoRa TM technology for connected devices and cutting edge Internet of Things (IoT) applications across Mumbai and Delhi. These trials will bolster the successful deployment of IoT applications in India, as part of the 4.9 billion connected devices and appliances globally in 2015, based on Gartner forecasts; a figure that is expected to reach 25 billion by 2020 - more than three times the number of people on earth today.

LoRaTM, a wireless communication technology dedicated to the Internet of Things (IoT) / Machine to Machine (M2M) communications networks, will be rolled out by Tata Communications across India with full coverage starting in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore, with the first phase covering 400 million people across Tier 1, 2, 3 and 4 cities. The new network ensures a super low-power, secure, bi-directional, communication solution which any organisation can use to connect objects and innovative applications simply and energy efficiently, overcoming high power consumption challenges with existing wireless solutions.

Tata Communications’ LPWAN wireless network is adaptable to serve the needs of both rural and urban residents. It supports communications in deep water and up to 50 metres underground while also penetrating up to seven walls inside buildings, making it suitable for use in underground train stations and car parks. Its 15km range also helps to ensure that people working or living in rural areas always remain connected.

PR - Nov 3, 2015 - Citrix: Staying agile and thriving in a changing world

Tight global markets and intense pressure on the bottom line pushes companies to learn to work more efficiently and more economically. Furthermore, tightening requirements around cost, security, government regulations, and industry standards all add another layer of complexity.

Fortunately, many organizations have come to realize that flexibility is the first order of business for every IT organization. They also understand that a whole new approach to technology is needed – one that is based on the assumption that the right answers found today might not be the right answers tomorrow. In short, infrastructure lock-in is death.

Today, an enterprise IT strategy needs to revolve around designing for the ‘change mandate’, a core principle of the software-defined workplace.

Juniper Research - Nov 2, 2015 - Hampshire, UK - Active VoLTE Connections to Exceed 1 Billion by 2018, as Mobile Operator Roll-outs Intensify

A new study from Juniper Research has found that the number of VoLTE (Voice over LTE) connections is anticipated to reach 2 billion by 2020, rising from an estimated 123 million in 2015. According to the research, the marked improvement in voice quality enabled by VoLTE is likely to spur increased adoption of the technology.

The research, found that direct revenues from VoLTE will be limited at first, with increased availability of compatible handsets driving adoption of the technology. It argued that network operators will initially focus on experience and quality of service, rather than monetisation, with failure to deliver a high quality offering at the outset potentially resulting in churn to rival operators.

The new research, ‘Future Voice Strategies: mVoIP, Carrier OTT, WebRTC, HD Voice & Video Calling 2015-2020’, also claimed that to remain competitive, operators will also need to ensure that their communications offerings match those of leading OTT providers. It cited the example of Facebook Messenger, which recently launched free HD (High Definition) VoIP call services over cellular and Wi-Fi networks. With this in mind, it argued that an operator HD Voice service proposition would be a critical element.

PR - Oct 28, 2015 - K.L - Internet Tracking Exposed

F-Secure introduced a new feature today for their Freedome VPN that lets people take control and see who’s watching them online. The new feature is a visualization tool called Tracker Mapper that shows users how websites and online tracking work together to create data collection networks that watch people as they browse the web.

Tracker Mapper was released to beta testers in July, and was developed in response to Freedome users’ interest in online tracking. Tracking has become a prominent part of the Internet – over half of the top 100 domains on the World Wide Web exist entirely to provide advertising and tracking services.

And a recent survey conducted amongst people beta testing Tracker Mapper found that 87 percent of respondents were worried or concerned about online tracking.

F-Secure’s Janne Pirttilahti, Director, Next Gen Security, said that Freedome users want more information on how tracking works because it’s a part of their online experience that’s difficult to understand.

Ovum - Nov 11, 2015 - Ovum sees telcos becoming established players in the pay-TV market

Telecoms operators now provide around one-fifth of the world’s pay-TV subscriptions. Operations owned or controlled by telcos accounted for 140 million retail pay-TV customer connections globally at the end of 2014 and this total soared to 177 million during 2015 – equivalent to 19% of the total pay-TV subscriber base (up from 14% year-on-year), according to global analyst firm Ovum.

According to Ovum’s latest research*, the Telco TV subscriber base is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4% to 2020 (compared with 2% across the wider pay-TV market), reaching 210.4 million. While IPTV will remain the dominant means of delivering Telco TV, traditional cable and satellite platforms will also continue to play a big role.

Ovum defines Telco TV as any subscription-based pay-TV operation provided directly by an operator whose core business is the provision of voice telecoms and/or broadband access services. As such, the Telco TV universe includes a large proportion of cable and satellite as well as IPTV customers.

PR - Nov 10, 2015 - Consumer Drone Sales to Reach Almost 4m this Year, Rising to 16m Annually by 2020

A new study from Juniper Research has found that reduced component cost, increased competition and a greater number of use cases will together push the number of consumer drones shipped globally to more than 20 million per annum, up from less than 4 million this year.

The new research – Drones: Consumer & Commercial Applications, Regulations & Opportunities 2015-2020, observed that usage had already extended beyond the core base of hobbyists, spurred by the drop in retail price and the increased functionality of the devices. It observed that most consumer drones now offered the capability for live streaming of photos and video.

Meanwhile, the research noted that while companies like DJI currently dominate the mid-priced and prosumer UAV market, an increasing number of players were targeting the low-tiered sector. New entrants include companies that have grown out of the toy radio-controlled model aircraft industry, such as China-based companies Syma Toys and Hubsan, and those that supply complementary devices and components to the UAV market, such as GoPro.

PR - Nov 9, 2015 - Ulleung County Office in South Korea Deploys Acronis Backup Advanced In a Remote Island Location

Acronis®, a global leader in new generation data protection, today announced that Ulleung County Office, situated in a remote island in the North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea, 120 km east of the Korean Peninsula in the Sea of Japan, implemented Acronis data protection technology across their entire IT infrastructure, increasing infrastructure resilience to data loss and reducing dependence on mainland technical support services.

Because of the remote location, prompt technical support services are not readily available to the Ulleung County Office, and historically data loss and system failure incidents resulted in prolonged downtime periods, halting the most administrative, welfare and education services provided to the county’s residents. The downtime also affected the infrastructure functionality supporting the islands’ sustainable development, tourism, agriculture and fisheries services.

Ulleung County Office selected Acronis Backup Advanced with the Universal License, enabling them to cover the entire range of IT hardware and software, including VMware-powered hybrid environment, and to respond to changing data protection needs quickly and easily — without the extra costs.

PR - Nov 6, 2015 - STERLING HEIGHTS, Michigan - BAE Systems Receives $245.3 Million U.S. Army Contract to Continue M109A7

The U.S. Army awarded BAE Systems a contract option worth $245.3 million to complete the low-rate initial production (LRIP) of the M109A7 self-propelled howitzer and M992A3 ammunition carrier.

The M109A7 program is a significant upgrade over the vehicle’s predecessor, the M109A6 Paladin Self-Propelled Howitzer. It uses the existing main armament and cab structure of the M109A6, but replaces the vehicle’s chassis structure with a new design that increases survivability and allows for the integration of Bradley common drive-train and suspension components. Additionally, the system leverages technologies developed under the Crusader and Non-Line-of-Sight Cannon programs such as a 600 volt on-board power generation, distribution & management system, coupled with high-voltage gun drive and projectile ramming systems.

The state-of-the-art “digital-backbone” and power generation capability provides significant growth potential for future payloads as well as accommodating existing battlefield network requirements. The upgrades ensure commonality with the existing systems in the U.S. Army’s Armored Brigade Combat Team, including the BAE Systems built Bradley Fighting Vehicle and Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle.

Ovum - Oct 28, 2015 - BT/EE given the regulatory nod, while Three/O2 looks increasingly uncertain

Comments by Matthew Howett, Practice Leader, Regulation, Ovum

Of course the more challenging transaction to win regulatory approval will be that of Three/O2. Across Europe the sentiment for greater industry consolidation has waned following suspected price increases in markets where the number of mobile players fell from 4 to 3, and where as a result of the changing of the guard at the EU competition authority, a higher bar has been set to win the necessary approval.

Rivals to both BT and EE have been calling for the structural separation of the incumbent to remove any possible incentive for BT to prioritise its own retail divisions, particularly in relation to the supply of mobile backhaul products. The CMA has considered this as part of its review, however sees no substantial lessening of competition.

Separately however, Ofcom is still considering the future structure of BT as part of its digital communications review. While Ofcom continues to stress that all options are being considered, it's felt that a full structural separation is likely to be disproportionate to fix any shortcomings of the current arrangement. We will know more in January 2016 when Ofcom is set to publish its initial conclusions.

PR - Oct 27, 2015 - CORVALLIS, Ore. - “Spring-mass” technology heralds the future of walking robots

A study by engineers at Oregon State University suggests that they have achieved the most realistic robotic implementation of human walking dynamics that has ever been done, which may ultimately allow human-like versatility and performance.

The system is based on a concept called “spring-mass” walking that was theorized less than a decade ago, and combines passive dynamics of a mechanical system with computer control. It provides the ability to blindly react to rough terrain, maintain balance, retain an efficiency of motion and essentially walk like humans do.

The system is also efficient. Studies done with their ATRIAS robot model, which incorporates the spring-mass theory, showed that it’s three times more energy-efficient than any other human-sized bipedal robots.

1.) It is a one-stop platform for developers to subscribe to different cloud infrastructures from proven global, regional and local cloud service providers - in other words, it allows you to subscribe to multiple providers from a single location with a single billing channel.

2.) Besides serving as the one-stop platform for developers to host apps, it also serves as a market place for cloud based apps - analogous to the AppStore for mobile apps.

3.) The best thing is that it is cheaper than going direct, this is achievable due to the crowd sourcing factor or some may call it the hedging factor.

The only disadvantage is that one is left with less subscription customization options.

For instance, if you subscribe directly to Windows Azure, you get to play around with more subscription options such as increasing the compute instance, storage, bandwidth, security and etc.

With MalaysiaOneCloud, one gets a typical of 10 options known as VM sizing options.

Besides targeting ISVs, it also targets enterprise for deployment of hybrid cloud.

Norhizam Abdul Kadir, MDeC’s Vice President of Infotech and Mohammed Sabuwala, CTO of CloudFX

MDeC’s Vice President of Infotech, Norhizam Abdul Kadir said, “With MalaysiaOneCloud, we are bringing cloud technology into the mainstream and making it more accessible than ever. Businesses can easily identify and choose the ideal cloud solutions for their needs with full disclosure of what they are paying for. We are very excited with this partnership with CloudFX and we anticipate this platform to provide a significant boost to our digital economy as well as promoting a transformative use of digital solutions”.

The MalaysiaOneCloud has completed more than 2 years of user tests with global and regional service providers in conjunction with more than 1000 hours of consultation with local market leaders from system integrators, ISV’s, resellers, enterprises and small-to-medium enterprises to ensure that the experience, portfolio, pricing and support model is flawlessly delivered to maximise customer value thus effectively positioning Malaysia and Malaysian businesses at the heart of innovation, growth and productivity in the era of digital economy.

Porn Presents the Greatest Threat For Malware Attacks

Nov 11, 2015 -

Blue Coat Systems, Inc. a market leader in today’s enterprise security announced an alarming hike in more malicious malware attacks. This includes from smaller scale, less disturbing attacks to serious personal ransomware (cyber blackmail) and undetectable inserts of spyware on devices with the intent to profile users’ buying behaviors.
Kenneth Chen, M.D, Blue Coat for ASEAN, Hong Kong & Taiwan

When Blue Coat recently compared the top categories of “infection vectors” from 2014 to 2015, it found that pornography was once again the number one threat vector, taking over from WebAds, which has dropped from almost 20 percent last year to less than five percent this year. The threats on porn sites include both malvertising attacks and sites that host Trojan horse apps.

“It certainly presents a problem whereby upon entering porn sites, users find that there is no easy way out once been exposed to malware attacks,” Chen expresses his concern over the increase in porn surfing activities from 16.55 percent in 2014 to over 36 percent this year. This potentially means that whenever we see a mobile user’s traffic heading to malicious sites, it is most likely 36 percent of the time that that user is following a link from a porn site.

The 2015 Blue Coat Mobile Malware Report highlights three types of malware users should be cautious of:

Potentially Unwanted Software (PUS)

This program typically behaves as “adware” or “spyware”, stalking on users’ online activity and personal data through deceptive advertising or socially-engineered attacks, designed to trick victim into installing these software, unwillingly or without their informed consent. Most junk mobile apps discovered on sites that host these software has been rising steadily which contributes a major shift in its volume within traditional malware and mobile space.

Ransomware

Thanks to the enhanced performance capabilities of smartphones, while some varieties only causes little damage beyond convincing victims to pay, “evil” ransomware resorts to more sophisticated approaches over the past years with the ability to render music files, photographs, videos and other document types unreadable. Such attack is characterized by SimpleLocker, an advanced cryptographic ransomware that allows cyber hostage-taker to demand untraceable form of payment (namely Bitcoin) within a strict time limit given before the files becomes permanently inaccessible to the owner.

Information Leakage

The most vital information of user such as phone’s operating system, manufacturer, specific apps or browsers visited can be stolen right under their noses when their mobile device is at 24/7 and 365-basis reporting and watch. Till today, no system tools can detect the incoming and outgoing data from their devices, however their leaky data will be openly revealed in the “User Agent” string, whether it’s an Android or iOS device.

Prepare Your Defenses against Malware Threats

To avoid these attacks, Blue Coat advocates the following tips and measures to strengthen corporate defenses:
  • Invest in visibility solutions from trusted security vendors that extend to mobile devices.
  • Create protected network such as Guest Wi-Fi with intelligent policies for employees and business guests to use instead of cellular data plans that bypasses corporate visibility.
  • Avoid downloading apps from unofficial sources such as free/cracked versions of popular apps, surfing porn, jailbreak (by overriding inherent security of your phone), and pay close attention to any warnings received especially when connected to free unsecured Wi-Fi networks.
  • Be wary of any suspicious activities indicated by your OS such as sudden installation of third party SSL certification on an Android which enables an unauthorized interception possible, especially in an environment where SSL interception takes place by policy.
  • “Press and hold” technique on your phone to reveal the true destination of on-screen links, like shortened URLs or phishing URLs.

PR - Nov 19, 2015 - IBM Watson ‘Trend App’ Forecasts What’s In & What’s Not this Holiday Season

IBM today launched the IBM Watson Trend App, a new way for shoppers to understand the reasons behind the top trends of the holiday season and also predict the hottest products before they sell out. The app is available via a free download at the Apple App Store.

The IBM Watson Trend app distills the sentiment of tens of millions of online conversations by scouring 10,000 sources across social media sites, blogs, forums, comments, ratings and reviews. Unlike other apps or lists that provide a static ranking of “hot” products, the Watson app reveals how consumers feel about the products they are considering or have purchased.

Using Watson’s understanding of natural language and machine learning technologies, the app uncovers layers of consumer sentiment to pinpoint patterns and trends to reveal why people are choosing certain products or brands. The app also uses predictive analytics to forecast if a particular trend is a fleeting fad or will continue to remain strong.

To uncover insights behind the top holiday trends and products, Watson’s natural language engine aggregates insights into distinct trend groups: content, context and sentiment. Each group is given a relative daily Trend Score, ranging from 0 to 100, based on the impact (size of the conversation) and the momentum (the rate of growth of the conversation).

Nov 27, 2015 - SG -

TripAdvisor®, the world’s largest travel site*, today launched a “Travel Timeline” feature for its mobile app that helps travellers conveniently log and share experiences from their trips. Once activated, the feature automatically creates a timeline of the places travellers have visited and the photos they’ve taken at each location, which can be viewed in chronological order or as a route on a map. The timeline is private to the user on their TripAdvisor app, but travellers can edit their timeline and easily share it with family and friends.

“Travel Timeline is a useful and valuable tool for chronicling travel experiences and conveniently capturing moments to remember,” said Adam Medros, senior vice president, global product, TripAdvisor. “TripAdvisor not only helps travelers plan and book their trips, but with Travel Timeline we help our community document and share them too.”

How Travel Timeline Works

To activate Travel Timeline, users log on to the TripAdvisor mobile app and opt-in to the feature. Once the feature is activated, it will keep a log of the points of interest that the user has visited in a running timeline, and travellers can easily rate and review hotels, restaurants, or attractions they visited. The feature uses the phone’s GPS and motion sensors to predict when the user is visiting somewhere or if they are just passing by. Users may turn Travel Timeline off at any time.

Travel Timeline Features:
  • Customisable: Users can curate the timeline and photos.
  • Offline: The feature logs activities without an Internet connection, helping travellers avoid data and roaming charges.
  • Private: Each traveller’s timeline and photos remain private to the user unless they choose to share them.
  • Shareable: Users can share a day in their timelines with family and friends.

Travel Timeline will be available through the free TripAdvisor mobile app only on iOS in 28 languages worldwide.

Ovum - Dec 2, 2015 - Ovum sees the largest impact from the growing take-up of ECM in the cloud

The enterprise content management (ECM) landscape has entered a period of rapid evolution, according to global analyst firm Ovum. Large vendors are now breaking down their huge product portfolios into smaller, more manageable solutions, using a best-of-breed approach.

However, the factors shaping the ECM market for 2016 are content analytics, the security of content, and the increased concern over compliance and governance risks, with the largest impact coming from ECM in the cloud.

In the new 2016 Trends to Watch report on Enterprise Content Management*, the independent technology analyst firm identifies five key trends that will impact ECM in 2016. They are:
  • Disruption will occur in ECM as major vendors adopt a solutions approach.
  • New opportunities for ECM in the cloud will emerge in 2016.
  • Content analytics provides a better understanding of how content is being used and its value to the organization.
  • Records management and e-discovery provision are important components of a compliance and governance strategy.
  • Information rights management and encryption help in the battle to secure content.

PR - Dec 1, 2015 - Cyber Security Landscape Expected to Improve in 2016: Kaspersky Lab

Speaking at the Cyber Security Summit in Port Dickson, Malaysia, Vitaly Kamluk, Principal Security Researcher, Global Research & Analysis Team (GReAT), Kaspersky Lab, in his conference presentation entitled “APAC – Regional Threat Overview”, suggested that the prevailing trend and data supports the thinking that Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) are expected to dwindle in 2016.

To date, 12 different types of APTs were detected in 2015, including Wild Neutron, Darkhotel, Naikon and Duqu 2.0. Each cyberattack held varying levels of intensity in terms of damages and malicious activities executed.

Sergey Lozhkin, Senior Security Researcher, GReAT, Kaspersky Lab

According to another senior security expert, Sergey Lozhkin, Senior Security Researcher, GReAT, Kaspersky Lab, the access to hacking and networks breaching tools is still widely available, despite the exposure and shutting down of the “undernet” or illegal resource site otherwise known as the Dark Web. Illegal hacking tools including hacking codes, data exfiltration viruses as well as Botnets are available on the Dark Web. But due to governmental and law enforcement measures, the more common or unrestricted Dark Web sites have been shut down.

APAC Businesses Poised for Major Digital Transformation

Dec 2, 2015-

Hitachi Data Systems Corporation (HDS), a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd., today released its Business and Technology Predictions for Asia Pacific in 2016. According to Adrian De Luca, chief technology officer of Hitachi Data Systems Asia Pacific, enterprises will experience major digital transformation next year as they strive to improve a host of key tech and non-tech functions.

Adrian De Luca, CTO, HDS, APAC

“Digital transformation is fast becoming an organizational issue. It is no longer just CIOs who are championing the need for digital change, but leaders across all business functions. For example, CMOs are finding that traditional ways of marketing are not as effective any more, while CFOs are discovering that consumer and supplier transaction models have shifted. There is now an almost universal understanding within businesses that all functions need to look at how they transform their own practices through digitization,” said De Luca. He cited digital transformation, smart cities, cross modal IT, multicloud, and skills shortages as the five key trends that will continue to shape both the IT and business landscapes in Asia Pacific for 2016.

#1: Traditional enterprises will transform into digital natives

There has been a resurgence in confidence among CIOs that they will see more of their revenues flowing through digital channels. According to the Gartner CIO Agenda Insights report, only 16% of CIOs last year expected the revenues in their business to flow through digital channels, but that has more than doubled this year to 37%. This is recognition of the fact that digital initiatives are not just coming from the CIO, but from all functions of the business that are creating their own platforms and hiring digital natives.

Today’s CMOs no longer go to the IT department to build their systems. They go directly to the providers and acquire them as a service. The same is true of businesses as a whole. Rather than waiting for a vendor or a competitor to develop a new platform, organizations are building and actively disrupting their own current systems.

#2: Smart companies will build smart cities

Smart cities have been a topic of interest for a long time in Asia Pacific, with many countries in the region rolling out their own initiatives to tackle everything from public safety to improved transportation. However, it has become apparent that few governments have the experience or the financial means to build and run these initiatives on their own. Instead, they are partnering with major industry players who are investing deeply in the Internet of Things (IoT). By bringing their own intellectual property, assembling ecosystems of technology providers and integrating them together, they can develop the solutions needed to make these cities a reality.

This means that smart companies will act as the catalysts for making smart cities a reality, as governments open the door through initiatives like Digital India, Smart Nation Singapore, and Digital China. The business opportunities for companies in the sector are huge, with the annual smart city investment in technology alone set to quadruple to US$11.3 billion by 2023, according to Navigant Research.

#3: Cross-modal IT will unify business silos

It is now recognized that there are two modes that IT organizations can follow to meet the needs of the digital enterprise.

Mode 1 – Applications that handle traditional systems of record – such as CRM and ecommerce systems. These systems are built around predictability, accuracy and availability, given the sensitive data they hold.

Mode 2 – Systems of insight, that are more exploratory such as big data analytics. They give a perspective of what is going on inside a business – enabling users to test certain hypotheses by layering datasets over each other. These systems emphasize agility and speed, giving organizations the ability to quickly and inexpensively test ideas, throw away anything that doesn't work and test out new ones.

The need to fuse these two modes together to become cross-modal will intensify. Especially as organizations strive to continually optimize the cost of running their systems and incorporate their systems of insight into new business processes and customer interactions.

The companies that will realize the greatest benefits will be those that are able to use agile methodologies in their workforce and offer quick-to-build application programming interfaces (API) of their business services. Businesses that also successfully build data lakes across their digital assets and standardize their infrastructure will do well, too.

#4: Multicloud will enable transregional business

According to De Luca, the emerging Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) promises to bring significant benefits to economic trading conditions within Asia-Pacific. To realize the full potential of this agreement, investment in technology infrastructure to connect these economies will be critical. Several companies are already expanding data center capacity to cater to the growing use of cloud computing. They are also investing in improving cross-border, high-speed connectivity. The creation of direct routes between key areas like South East Asia, Australia and the United States of America is well underway

“This opening up of the market will have an impact on how businesses consume cloud and expand the options that they have today. With as many as 70% of organizations either using or evaluating hybrid clouds nowadays, as well as provisions in the TPP to protect offshore data and avoid electronic duties, creating a multicloud across continental borders to allow businesses to expand becomes viable,” said De Luca.

#5: Skills shortage will spark a talent pursuit

Several factors will impact the technology employment market in 2016, forcing many organizations to look at how they will fill the talent deficit to continue to innovate and remain competitive.

Addressing the IT skills shortage will not just be about pumping out more IT graduates with in-demand skills like data science. Appealing to the interests of the best young talent while investing in increasing the productivity of existing employees will be critical to bridging the gap over the long run.

"The working practices of ‘Gen Z’ workers are vastly different from those before them. With this generation expected to work an average of 17 jobs in their lifetime, they will develop a broader variety of skills as well as be exposed to multiple industries during their careers. Companies will need to figure out how to tap into this. They are driven more by their contribution to society than the logo of the company they work for,” said De Luca.

Governments recognize this economic imperative and generational shift by changing the labor market, introducing new tax incentives and passing laws to allow for easier investment, such as through crowdsourcing. Continual learning is also becoming a focus for governments, with Singapore investing SG$1.2 billion (US$0.9 billion) in technology development to drive improvements within its public sector.

RTG Technology Summit phase 1: Visual Technologies

Dec 8, 2015 -

Radeon Technologies group announced three new updates to its visual display technologies.

The evolution of AMD FreeSync

AMD is enabling FreeSync support over HDMI in early 2016, making smooth gaming experiences more accessible to everyone. FreeSync through HDMI will be supported on all AMD APUs and GPUs that already support FreeSync via DisplayPort, and AMD is working with ecosystem partners including LG, Samsung and Acer to deliver FreeSync over HDMI-compatible displays. Potential use cases include:
  • More affordable mainstream monitors, 70% of which lack a DisplayPort connector
  • External monitors for notebooks with an HDMI port connected to FreeSync-ready Radeon graphics
Lenovo Y700 - AMD FreeSync Notebook

AMD is also introducing the first notebook with a validated AMD FreeSync panel, the Lenovo Y700. The Lenovo Y700 features the AMD FX-8800P “Carrizo” APU and Radeon R9 M380 Graphics with a direct drive LCD display and a 40-60Hz dynamic refresh range.

AMD and its partners have now announced or shipped 40 displays across the DisplayPort and HDMI interfaces, making AMD FreeSync the world’s foremost dynamic refresh technology by 2:1.

High Dynamic Range (HDR) compatibility

As consumers start to demand higher-quality monitors, HDR technology is emerging to set an excitingly high bar for overall display quality. HDR panels are characterized by:
  • Brightness between 600-1200 cd/m2 of luminance, with an industry goal to reach 2000
  • Contrast ratios that closely mirror human visual sensitivity to contrast (SMPTE 2084)
  • And the Rec.2020 color gamut that can produce over 1 billion colors at 10 bits per color

HDR displays can be designed with the supreme black depth of OLED, or the vivid brightness of local dimming LCD. Both are suitable for gaming. A selection of TVs are already available, and consumer monitors are expected to reach the market in the second half of 2016. Such displays will offer unrivaled color accuracy, saturation, brightness, and black depth—in short, they will come very close to simulating the real world.

Existing Radeon R9 300 Series GPUs will be compatible with HDR displays in 2016 for gaming, while our 2016 GPUs will extend support to both gaming and movies. We’re already working with top game developers to enable HDR output from 2016 games, and will have more to share on that work next year.

Brocade Predicts Top Transformative Technology Trends in Networking for 2016

Dec 9, 2015 -

The Year 2015 has seen organisations disrupting their markets with the digital transformation of their businesses as they embrace 3rd Platform computing and New IP networking strategies that have helped them become leaders in new markets. Moving into 2016, more businesses are expected to leverage smart machines and transformative technologies to give them a clear competitive advantage.

As 2015 draws to a close, Brocade looks into the crystal ball to outline the top transformative technology trends in networking to watch for in 2016 and beyond:

1. The cloud will gain even greater traction:

According to IDC, more than half of all IT spending is going to be on the 3rd Platform, otherwise known as cloud-based technologies, and that figure will surpass 60 percent of all IT spending by 2020. The migration of old, legacy IP network architectures to New IP networks will accelerate, reaching near-mainstream adoption as enterprises and service providers transform their networks into an open, software-driven platform for innovation and a competitive edge.

2. Software-based networks are clearly the future:

Over the past year, software has transformed the data center and networks in general, with service providers and enterprises turning to Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) to create new services quickly, scale them easily, and deliver them in user-centric ways. 2016 will bring about the expanded adoption of innovative, open, and automated software networking platforms as enterprises and service providers migrate to New IP networks. The increasing deployment of x86 server architecture will accelerate this transformation, replacing specialised networking hardware in multiple network roles, such as Application Delivery Controllers (ADCs). ADCs have already begun transforming to a virtual (vADC) model to help enterprises and services providers scale capacity on demand to handle peak workloads. Software is increasingly permeating every aspect of this virtualization transformation.

3. The importance of security will skyrocket:

Organisations operating in today's New IP networking environment face increasing demands for cloud-based applications and need to support social, mobile, and Big Data initiatives. However, security-related attacks and breaches continue to impede the delivery of services and create additional challenges to network and service reliability. New IP networking solutions allow organizations to deploy more advanced security that is designed into the network from the start, not bolted on at edge to existing infrastructure. The network itself can be pervasively vigilant and track behaviour on and not just access to the network, to quickly identify and prevent unwanted activity. Security services can be virtualized, enabling organisations to distribute security wherever it is needed and customise security at various levels—by geography or location, function, group or individual, or application.

4. DevOps will play a much larger role:

DevOps, or any agile software development methodology that closely matches services with business demands, will gain widespread influence and uptake among both enterprises and service providers as a way to ensure they remain competitive. According to IDC, enterprises pursuing digital transformation strategies will more than double their software development capabilities by 2018. Companies that build and use field-focused development teams that operate without the constraints of rigid traditional product development processes will have a significant advantage in customer-focused innovation. This advantage extends to both the speed of development and to customer intimacy and retention.

5. Big Data and analytics will get even bigger:

Organisations that are able to take advantage of the explosion of data will seize the day, and many of these disrupters will be startups that use Big Data to make strategic decisions based on analytics. As data gets increasingly colossal, so do the opportunities, skillsets, and demand for analytic and cognitive services across industries. The ability to derive intelligence from Big Data in real time will create a distinct competitive edge for any business.

6. Machine learning takes off:

The advent of machine learning is the computing breakthrough made possible by Big Data. The emergence of algorithms that can learn from and even make predictions based on the enormous amounts of data and meta-data that are generated, transmitted, and stored via networks will change the world of data centers and networks beginning in 2016. This process is already underway, as facial and speech recognition are changing the worlds of consumer electronics and the cloud services that use them, and anomaly detection is quickly becoming a crucial part of network security.

7. The rise of the telco with virtual architecture:

Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) that have been struggling to keep up with fast-changing customer needs and market opportunities will be compelled to embrace SDN and NFV in 2016. The risk of falling behind is set to intensify with each passing day as carriers and service providers that embrace change will become the winners in the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem and 5G race by 2020.

8. The technical talent crunch gets serious:

Vendors, service providers, and user organizations are all competing for a limited pool of next-generation talent with the required coding and technical skills. The talent crunch issue will become increasingly acute, and organizations will have to rethink their human resource strategies and policies in order to attract, develop, and retain strong talent. Technical qualifications that were only recently seen as de facto passports to important positions in networking will change in the face of self-provisioning and self–programming networks. Increasingly, critical networking positions will begin to require advanced analytical and coding skills that are in very short supply today.

PR - Dec 8, 2015 - Kaspersky Lab’s New Malware Count Falls by 15,000 a Day in 2015

According to Kaspersky Lab, 2015 marked the moment when demand for new malicious programs reached saturation point, as the number of new malware files detected every day by its products fell by 15,000, from 325,000 in 2014 to 310,000.

Kaspersky Lab’s experts believe this is mainly due to the fact that coding new malware is expensive and cybercriminals have realized that they can get equally good results using intrusive advertising programs or legitimate digital signatures in their attacks. This approach appears to be working, as results show that despite the cost-cutting in malware creation, in 2015 the number of users attacked by cybercriminals increased by 5%.

Cybercriminals in search of a quick return appear to have decided that complex coding tools such as rootkits, bootkits or replicating viruses, may bring results, but at a cost, reducing their overall margins and revenue.

For this reason, 2015 saw adware, essentially harmless but often intrusive, become more prominent among overall anti-virus detections. This marks an evolution in cybercriminal tactics, with many now acting almost as businesses, engaged in selling quasi-legitimate commercial software, activity and other “essentials”.
